Spotted Sandpiper with food
It was entertaining and revelatory to watch this adult Spotted Sandpiper feeding on insects — it would crouch down low to stalk the numerous flies on the mud, then dart its head out at one and often its quick strike would prove successful. It has a fly in its bill in this image, and several others are flying around (possible future prey). I watched this behaviour for quite a while, including observing juveniles getting the hang of the same technique www.flickr.com/photos/luminouscompositions/54364199219/in...
This intriguing natural history drama occurred at Weed Lake, near Langdon in southern Alberta, Canada.
