Eared Grebe adult with three young
This adult Eared Grebe with three young was seen in an area this species has used regularly for nesting, although the water level there fluctuates. The location is about 5 km north on Highway 612 from the village of Herbert, which is just off the Trans-Canada Highway in southcentral Saskatchewan, Canada. (It is sometimes referred to as Francis Lake, though between encroaching vegetation and drought there may not be much water visible.) The grebes in these photos were in a channel among Cattails close to the road on the west side, which is {was ?} a causeway at this point since it split{s} the ‘lake.’ This particular area was productive for the grebes in this season, with quite a few pairs — most with multiple young.
