Oriental Hobby with food
Oriental Hobby is a small species in the Falconidae, but still an adept predator. These birds often hunt from a prominent vantage point, and that was indeed where I spotted this individual. It was perched on a snag, and luckily I glimpsed it as we drove by in the van. I called out and we were able to back up and then watch this raptor feeding. The reddish underparts distinguish this species from the Eurasian Hobby, which migrates through its range (which is primarily from the Himalayas and Southeast Asia to Papua New Guinea, with an odd gap in Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo). Our sighting was in the Doi Lang area of Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park, Chiang Mai province, Thailand.
