Lapland Longspur male on snow
This male Lapland Longspur in prime breeding plumage rested on a snowbank along the Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk Highway in Canada’s Northwest Territories. This species has a circumpolar breeding range, so is found in the northern summer on the tundra of Eurasia as well as North America (as the first part of the common name suggests). The long hind claws (“spurs”) can be discerned in this image.
