Cascade Brewery

This photograph is a composition in which every element in the frame is fully intended, including the line of the mountain proceeding to the summit of the building. Even the cyclist made an appearance on cue. That wonderful hedge is part of the gardens that surround the brewery.

You are looking at the oldest continually existing brewery in Australia. It is Cascade Brewery in South Hobart and it was established in 1824 by ex convict Peter Degraves (1778-1852). The site was chosen because of the fresh cool mountain water that flowed through the rivulet, and to this day is one of the reasons why Tasmanian beer is among the purest anywhere in the world.

The summit of Mt Wellington/kunanyi sits behind the spectacular old building facade that has it's own tortured history. In the tragic 1967 bushfires the brewery was almost completely destroyed (and 64 people around Hobart were killed), but this part of the building stood as a reminder of its historic past. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascade_Brewery
