The Lighthouse, larapuna
Built of striking pink granite in 1889, this lighthouse has saved many lives. In 1875, a hazardous rock was discovered just below the water line off St Helens Point, so it was decided to build a lighthouse. It took over a decade to arrange the finance and obtain the building materials.
The small auxiliary light seen here in the background was designed to light the Victoria rocks below. It was taken out of commission when the light was electrified in the 1930s. Access to Eddystone Point was only possible by sea until the 1920s when a road was established through to Gladstone. Wireless communication was established in 1935.
