A Dash of Red
The red stripe was added to the Low Head Lighthouse in northern Tasmania in 1926. The main reason was to increase daytime visibility from the sea. Of course that massive foghorn (the only one in Tasmania) sounded whenever the lighthouse itself was not visible.
The thornbush you can see in the foreground is extremely sharp. I know because when I took those dawn shots here last winter (it was almost zero degrees Celsius) I cut myself and didn't feel a thing until my camera was covered in blood. But these bushes serve an important purpose. They provide shelter for a colony of Little Penguins, protecting them from any marauding dogs.
