Rugged Coastline

This photograph provides a good view of what biologists call the "Littoral zone". This is the region just above the waterline where the orange lichens flourish. You'll see the dolerite rocks that are splashed with the waves have no lichen on them and appear black. But where it is dry, that's where the lichens flourish.
