Mt Olympus - first view
And here is the first view I had of Mt Olympus through the trees at Cynthia Bay on Lake St Clair (leeawulenna), Tasmania. Cynthia Bay is actually the shallowest part of this lake, the deepest freshwater lake in Australia.
The deep basin in which the lake lies was scoured out by the action of glaciers. Moraines, where debris is forced to the margins of the glacier, run along part of the length of the lake.
The lake is 15 kilometres long and 3 kilometres wide with a surface area of 45 square kilometres. At its deepest point it is 167 metres deep. It is like an inland fjord fed by three rivers, Narcissus River, Cuvier River and Hamilton Creek. As we have already seen it is the source of the River Derwent.
