Classic View

Here at last the bright sun has fully illuminated the Low Head Lighthouse as it stands on the hill looking out to sea. This is the classic postcard view.

The lighthouse is Australia's third oldest and a beacon has run here since 1805 not long after the settlement of Port Dalrymple (now George Town) in northern Tasmania. In 1833 a permanent lighthouse was established and the beautiful stone building on the right is the only surviving structure of that complex.

The current lighthouse itself was built in 1888 to replace the original convict structure. In 1926 the broad red band was painted to the tower to aid visibility during the day. Originally the light was powered by a system that involved whale oil, but in 1916 this was replaced by a kerosene mantle light and maintained by a full time lighthouse keeper. In 1940 the light was electrified.

This was also one of the last fully automated lighthouses in Australia. A lightkeeper was not replaced until 1995.
