Boatman's Cottage

We are currently in a series of photographs taken at the historic Low Head Pilot Station. Pilots were first stationed here from 1805 to guide shipping into the dangerous entrance of the Tamar River. In 1833 a permanent settlement on this site was established, making this the oldest continuous pilot station in Australia.

The role of boatmen was to do the heavy work. Rowing the little pilot boats out to the incoming ship, thus delivering the pilot, maintaining the seaworthiness of the vessels and any other tasks assigned by the station's Captain.

These stone cottages were built to last. This one dates from 1861, and it has been well cared for. It is now a place where tourists can come and stay for short visits.
