Palais Theatre
Right next to Luna Park on the St Kilda Esplanade is this glorious ecclectic "art deco" style theatre. It was designed by Henry Eli White. The architect stated that he adopted no particular style in the design, and the interior has been described at times as Spanish, French, Oriental and Italian.
Built to replace an earlier cinema that was destroyed by fire, the Palais opened in 1927. With a capacity of nearly 3000 people, it is the largest theatre of its kind in Australia. With the investment of $20 million in state funding, the Palais was fully restored in 2017. It is now a premier venue for live performances, providing an intimate atmosphere whilst still allowing for a large number of patrons.
