B. COTTENCEAU
Perfect pair
Two antelopes are sketched with strong, dark lines on a white plaster background. Room B1, Building B. Acroteri, Thera, 16th cent. BC. (National Archaeological Museum, Athens)
Their simple figures are slender and agile, and their movements reserved yet expressive. From the same room as the ‘Boxing children’ fresco and possibly part of a large symbolic composition of humans and young animals. Antelopes, alone or in pairs, also decorated the other walls. The composition was capped by a decorative frieze of ivy stems and leaves.
