The genus Muscari, commonly and collectively known as grape hyacinths, are a group of deciduous plants native to Eurasia that produce urn-shaped spikes of dense, most commonly blue, flowers resembling bunches of grapes in the spring. Some species are among the earliest to bloom in the spring. They are planted as bulbs and tend to multiply quickly (naturalise) when planted in good soils. They prefer well drained sandy soil, that is acid to neutral and not too rich. May be found in woodlands or meadows, they are commonly cultivated in lawns, borders, rock gardens and containers. They require little feeding or watering in the summer, and sun or light shade.The Muscari have originated in the old world, from the Mediterranean basin, the Center and South of Europe, Northern Africa, the West, Center and South-West of Asia. The term muscari comes from the Latin muscus, since the scent is said to resemble musk.
Muscari è un genere di piante della famiglia delle Liliaceae comprendente parecchie specie bulbose e numerose varietà con infiorescenze, disposte in spighe o racemi, tra l'azzurro e l'indaco. Tutte hanno in comune il bulbo tunicato e le foglie strette e lunghe fino a 30cm.Il nome di Muscari venne attribuito da C. Clusius, per il tenue profumo somigliante a quello del muschio di alcune varietà.Pianta fiorita bulbosa, molto rustica, alta al massimo 40 cm. Presenta un numero limitato di foglie basali, lineari con lamina stretta e molto spessa, erette, ma ripiegate in basso nella porzione terminale. Il fusto porta un'infiorescenza a racemo allungato e compatto, composta da fiori di piccole dimensioni, di colore blu scuro, violetto o bianco con il perigonio globoso oppure oblungo. Il frutto è una capsula.Pianta perenne.originaria dell'Eurasia,fiorisce indicativamente da febbraio a giugno con variazioni secondo la specie.Sono generalmente utilizzati in aiuole, bordure o giardini rocciosi, per ottenere delle belle macchie di colore; ma sono coltivati anche in vaso o in fioriere su terrazzi e balconi.
