Clematis vitalba L. è una pianta arbustiva delle Ranunculaceae nota anche col nome comune di vitalba. In Italia è presente su tutto il territorio sino a circa 1300 m in incolti, boschi di latifoglie, macchie temperate.
Mostra un comportamento rampicante con fusti ramificati, che si allunga anche per 10-15 metri sugli alberi, sviluppando alla base tronchi legnosi anche piuttosto grossi.
È considerata una pianta infestante del bosco. Infatti, specialmente in associazione con i rovi, la vitalba crea dei veri e propri grovigli inestricabili a danno della vegetazione arborea che viene letteralmente aggredita e soffocata. Tali presenze sono infatti quasi sempre l'espressione di un degrado boschivo.
