Anteater (Tamandua mexicana) - Corcovada National Park - Costa Rica
Geographic range: Neotropical: Found from Mexico NW Peru and NW Venezuela. In Mexico from San Luis Potosi and Tamaulipas south.
Physical characteristics: Long -bodied with tapered snout. Overall body color cream to golden brown. Black patch shaped as a vest present. Feet strong, clawed. Tail prehensile and almost naked.
Food habits: Insectivorous. Mostly feeds on ants, termites and bees.
Reproduction: Mating all year round. One offspring born at a time.
Behavior: Both arboreal and terrestrial. Individuals show preferences to one or the other kind of activity. Solitary. Silent. Uses strong claws to rip open insect nests and rotten wood.
Habitat: Evergreen forest, deciduous forest, savannah.
