Don't Look Past Me | Soul

Don't look past me, photo essay. Part 2 of 3.

A number of chemicals are released during orgasm, including norepinephrine, serotonin, oxytocin, vasopressin, nitric oxide, and prolactin. A study at the University of California found that the hormone oxytocin is "associated with the ability to maintain healthy interpersonal relationships and healthy psychological boundaries with other people" (3). Vasopressin is another hormone that has been associated with the formation of long-term, loving relationships. Endorphins also play a key role in producing a general sense of well-being, including feeling soothed, peaceful and secure.

Prolactin is a feel-good hormone released during orgasm that provides the body with sexual gratification and is an indicator of sexual satisfaction and relaxation. Researchers at the University of Paisley found that there was 400% more prolactin in the bloodstream of people who had sex with a partner, in comparison to those who had masturbated to porn (4). The good effects of orgasm are strongest when part of a loving relationship. A person masturbating to porn is less likely to feel sexual contentment and is less likely to feel relaxed and de-stressed. This may imply that masturbation is required more frequently to fulfill sexual needs and to loosen up.
