Leiden | Koornbrug
The Koornbrug is a fixed stone arch bridge with double canopy over the water of the Nieuwe Rijn River in the center of Leiden.
On this bridge, as the name suggests, corn was traded for centuries [The bridge's name dates back to 1443 when the corn market was first held here].
To keep the wares dry, a canopy was built in 1834, making this bridge not the only one, but the oldest covered bridge. Under the roof, moreover, the corn was stored; the holes in the ceiling provided ventilation.
