I’ve got your number!

The challenge for Saturday 10th September is ‘numbers’. ‘Numbers’ is the name Apple gave to their spreadsheet app on iPads, and I did toy with the idea of using that in some way.

But then, as I started on these puzzles in my newspaper earlier this week, it struck me that with some luck, a following wind, and a pot of coffee, I might in a little while be looking at 162 numbers? (Or, if you prefer, looking at the numbers 1 - 9 eighteen times each?) If, that is, I didn’t get myself embrangled, as I frequently do!

>> I use the term ‘embrangled’ for when I’ve discovered I’ve put the same number down twice in the same row, column, or 3x3 box, and in correcting that error I’ve merely created another error elsewhere in the grid, and in correcting that one I’ve created another - well, you get the picture! So I give it up in disgust and turn to something useful, such as worming the cat (we don’t have a cat) or realising that the grass is beginning to grow again after the drought but that it’s now too wet to cut after the recent downpours! <<

I don’t usually complete the ‘Easy’ puzzle in my head, and I don’t even attempt it with the ‘Medium’ puzzle, and the scattered jottings you see around the lower grid are the merest hint of the usual mass of calculations covering most of the rest of the page! Anyway, I managed not to get myself embrangled this time … unless you spot any errors I’ve missed? A final word: working on these puzzles is, as I’m sure you realise, vital mental exercise to keep my ancient brain active … unless it’s a displacement activity for when I ought to be doing something more useful, as above!
