China Datong Shanxi 27th October 1983

On a beautiful crisp morning in Datong Chinese Railways 2-10-2s QJ6346 & QJ6193 double-head a freight train south out of the city. The "going away" shot of this train was posted a while ago. I took mainly video in China which one day I will get round to editing and posting.

We spent an hour in the morning alongside the line here & saw 24 steam engines in that time but the overhead wires were already up & not long afterwards steam haulage was superceded.

The afternoon was spent at Datong Locomotive Works. At that time the building of new steam engines -JSs - was still in full swing. For someone who had become interested in steam too late to visit Doncaster or Swindon works it was a great experience to see locos under construction 15 years after the end of steam in the UK. A long way to go but worth it.
