Durham Wearmouth Colliery Sunderland 2nd June 1968

My first and only trip to Sunderland with friends who lived there was over the Bank Holiday so most of the industrial steam was not working.

In this view there are 5 steam engines plus the running shed in the foreground with the mine head gear in the background.

This was the largest pit in Sunderland and only closed in 1993. The colliery yard rings to different sounds today as Sunderland Football Club have built their new stadium, The Stadium of Light, on this site.
