Sheffield Victoria South Yorkshire September 1969
For a couple of weeks in autumn 1969 trains to and from Manchester were diverted over the Woodhead route because of tunnel work on the Midland main line north of Chesterfield.
Designed by the LNER in the late-1930s, EM1 E26055, named Prometheus, has just taken over the 08.20 London-Manchester train from Peak diesel 92 which arrived from the south. 92 is now moving into the centre road to wait on its next train from Manchester.
All gone today of course except for one of the goods avoiding lines, now a single line to Stocksbridge, behind me over on the far side. The station itself closed to passengers only 3 months after this photo was taken.
