Lighthouse Urk Bench Bike View

(cameraphone suckery)

After peddling, the supreme drudgingly boring 25km of the LF20 route tracing the dikes of the Noordoostpolder (English), one arrives at Urk (Groningen->Urk: 140km.)

Urk was once an island and still boasts a lighthouse, a fishing fleet and I shouldn't forget to mention: a colony of backward fanatical christians.

I took a short break here, watching the waters, the ships, fighting the sensation of having travelled 300 years back in time, then ate a Nutella sandwich before heading of again into flevoroute proper, the actual Flevo Polder. And beyond.

Last saturday (16th of september) I decided to tackle the LF20 bicycle route from Groningen to Haarlem... in one day. That's 260km (162 miles).

I peddled a grand total of 245km, arrived in Amsterdam and decided to call it quits and head back with the train. Luckily the train company decided to finish my day by making the trip back an ordeal, having to reroute, transfer and hopping on a bus for the last stretch, not to mention having to stand all of the wretched 4 hours it took (clutching my trusty bicycle).

All in all though most parts of the route are lovely, especially if you decide to take on the route in a more leisurely fashion i guess :) As i've had various people tell me, delighting in trying this in one day might possibly be considered a trifle loony (hey!). To which I have to say: pah.
