Poseidons roar (in explore)

Well, this trip to Porthcawl in South Wales turned into one of the most exciting shoots I’ve ever done. I had been checking the weather apps for a few days as they had been predicting some really strong winds coming up from the southwest. This lighthouse at the Welsh town of Porthcawl has been a long time target of mine so I decided to take the gamble and head on over to it on a very blowy Monday morning. When I arrived and saw the waves crashing over the top of the pier wall I knew I was in for a bit of a doozy! Now I’m not a small chap by any means (6ft4 and twentymumble stone) but even I was struggling to stay upright in the wind. I had my 70-200mm f4 lens on the camera and I had to shoot handheld as if I had even attempted to use a tripod the wind would have made sure it was half a mile away from me in Treco bay in no time. Luckily the shooting position I was in had a hoofing great concrete wall to protect from the waves and most of the wind so it didn’t make it too hard to compose the shots. So I settled in and watched for the big waves to come crashing in. I managed over 800 shots in an hour and it took me a while to find this one among them when editing. I love the way the wave and the top of the lighthouse combine to form this face that takes centre stage in this image. And the power of this wave was just insane! You could almost feel it as it slammed into the pier. Incredible location and will definitely be heading there again if conditions like this happen again!
