Lençóis Maranhenses. Maranhão, Brasil (see related photos in my Brasil Album)
Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses is located in Maranhao State; a roughly 600 sq mile area. Although it looks like a desert, it isn't as there over 40 inches of rain per year here. None of the dunes border the ocean - they are all inland. On the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, a combination of river flows, blowing wind and rain results in formations as seen in this photo. During the rainy season, there can be masses of very small lagoons among the dunes. In the dry season, mostly large bodies of water are present. The water is fresh, clear and has fish in it. When I was there, it was rather dry so the lagoons were all very shallow.
