1/6 plate 1890s British ambrotype of a family apparently on a seaside holiday.
Ambrotypes had a much more extended period of popularity in Britain than they did elsewhere - this image was taken about 30 years after ambrotypes had ceased to be popular on the other side of the Atlantic.
It's also interesting to note the poor quality of this otherwise charming photo. Later ambrotypes such as this one seem to have been the British equivalent of the American carnival or county fair tintype - a cheap and near instantaneous memento of a fun day out.
