British soldier c.1872

This tinted CDV of an unidentified British soldier was taken by W. H. Franklin of 3 Lower Street, Deal, Kent.

Concerning the dating and regiment of this soldier I will simply present here the opinion of Charles Griffin, who kindly responded to my queries about this:

"The soldier is wearing a red 'frock' which was an undress tunic for marching and campaigning. It is unusual to see a studio photo of a soldier wearing this as they usually wore their full dress tunic for walking out. This garment was introduced in 1869. The style of cuff he wears is the early type with a white loop so I would date this photo as early 1870s.

The regiment, if he is in a regular unit and not a volunteer unit, is probably the 50th Queen's Own Regiment which became the West Kents in 1881. Deal is in East Kent...but the East Kent regiment was the Buffs whose collar and cuffs were pale buff. The 50th had dark blue collar and cuffs.

So he is probably a private of the 50th regiment c1872."
