Sweden-Stockholm Old Town Gamla Stan

View On Black

Gamla stan (The Old City), is the old town of Stockholm, Sweden. The town dates back to the 13th century, and consists of medieval alleyways, cobbled streets, and archaic architecture. Stortorget is the name of the scenic large square in the centre of Gamla Stan, which is surrounded by old merchant's houses.

Stockholm has been the political and economic centre of Sweden since the 13th century. It is the capital and largest city in Sweden and the site of the national Swedish government, the parliament, and the official residence of the Swedish monarch.

It's strategic location on fourteen islands around one of Europe’s largest and best-preserved medieval city centres, at the mouth of Lake Mälaren where it meets the Baltic Sea, has been historically important. Since the city is built on islands and known for its beauty, its buildings, its water and parks, it has also been called "The Venice of the North"
