Der Hafen Rotterdam ist (nach Shanghai und Singapur) der drittgrößte Seehafen der Welt und der mit Abstand größte Tiefseehafen Europas. Der im Rhein-Maas-Delta an der Rheinmündung (Nordsee) gelegene Hafen hatte im Jahr 2012 einen Güterumschlag von 441 Millionen Tonnen.
Er liegt an einer der dichtestbefahrenen Wasserstraßen der Welt und ist im Gegensatz zu den meisten anderen Nordseehäfen von Schiffen bis 24 Meter Tiefgang anfahrbar. Bestehend seit dem 14. Jahrhundert begann der Aufschwung des Hafens mit der Industrialisierung im Ruhrgebiet, das über den Rhein direkt erreichbar ist. Der Hafen Rotterdam und die hafenbezogene Wirtschaft trägt damit allein etwa 7 % zum niederländischen Bruttoinlandsprodukt bei und sorgt für etwa 320.000 Arbeitsplätze, wovon sich etwa 60.000 direkt im Hafengebiet befinden. Das Hafengebiet selbst reicht knapp 40 Kilometer von der Rotterdamer Innenstadt bis an den Hoek van Holland und nimmt etwa 100 km² Fläche ein.

The Port of Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe, located in the city of Rotterdam, Netherlands. From 1962 until 2002 it was the world's busiest port, now overtaken by first Singapore and then Shanghai. In 2009, Rotterdam was the world's tenth-largest container port in terms of twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) handled (2008: ninth, 2006: sixth). In 2011 Rotterdam was the world's fifth-largest port in terms of annual cargo tonnage.
Covering 105 square kilometres (41 sq mi), the port of Rotterdam now stretches over a distance of 40 kilometres (25 mi). It consists of the city centre's historic harbor area, including Delfshaven; the Maashaven/Rijnhaven/Feijenoord complex; the harbours around Nieuw-Mathenesse; Waalhaven; Vondelingenplaat; Eemhaven; Botlek; Europoort, situated along the Calandkanaal, Nieuwe Waterweg and Scheur (the latter two being continuations of the Nieuwe Maas); and the reclaimed Maasvlakte area, which projects into the North Sea.
Rotterdam consists of five distinct port areas and three distribution parks that facilitate the needs of a hinterland with 40,000,000 consumers.
