Fall Below Eternity

Campfires illuminate the golden aspens of late autumn. Fall color contrasts against the deep blue of a Milky Way filled sky as the last die hard campers and one lone photographer spend the cold night high in the Eastern Sierra. The crescent moon had just disappeared behind the towering mountains still provided a glow to the sky just above the peaks. A billion and one stars filled the sky and reflected in the water below the small fishing dock that protruded onto the small lake near Bishop California.

The wife and dog had long since abandoned me for the warmth of the truck. My feet slowly grew numb but the scene before me kept me transfixed on the ever changing and fantastic scene before me. Suddenly a noise in the aspens behind me made the hair on my neck stand up. I quickly reached for my only weapon, a mini mag light that revealed that it was nothing more than a number of deer that had come to get a cool drink from the lake just below the dock. Occasionally I would hear one of the many trout in the lake jump and splash back into the water but otherwise it was a quiet calm night with stars so bright they illuminated the mountains. It was one cool night, pun intended.
