October in the Aspens

A week earlier this grove of Aspen trees was just starting to change from their vivid greens to subtle shades of yellow but following an unexpected snow storm in the Sierra Mountains the colors kicked in and we were able to get some great reds and orange mixed in. The surprise was the many dark chocolate brown leaves that we found on many of the trees. At first I thought the leaves had been burnt by the frost but upon close inspection they were in the same condition as the yellow and orange leaves but just a deep color brown. This was something I had not seen in such abundance in previous years. It is amazing how much a place that is pretty much untouched by people can change in just a year.
