Great Black Wasp

Unfortunately there is nothing in this picture to denote scale, but this was quite possibly the largest wasp I have ever seen. I could be mis-identifying it, because it was larger than I see specified for Sphex pensylvanicus (it was maybe 2 to 2.5 inches long)
