Bathtub Jen, Armed and Dangerous

This weekend I see Bathtub Jen and the Henchmen in their showcase performance with the Frigid New York theater festival, and the show is a bad-punny potty-mouthed delight. This shot is not from that show - I'm watching, for once, without my camera in hand; it's from the night I first saw Jen and her henchman ex-con con-man musical partner, Ivan (Charley Layton), hosting the Gemini & Scorpio Lost Circus party over the summer.

When she first appears, Bathtub Jen stumps on with the aid of a wooden (table) leg belted on below the knee, with a mismatched mannequin hand where her left would ordinarily be, and a steampunky eye-patch strapped over her eye. These accoutrements come and go - in real life, Jen has two each in the leg, hand, and eye departments. She and Charley are on the lam, she explains, squinting out into the house. So don't tell.

Soon enough, Police Commissioner Kelly appears, with his billy club, his spoons, his tiny drum set and his alarming collection of battery-operated erotic toys. There's a problem with money. There's a problem with hygiene. There's a problem with The Law. There's a problem with Ivan. There are musical numbers - Jen plays a sweet trumpet, and Charley plays a variety of things with strings, from ukulele to doghouse bass. There are terrible, terrible, terrible jokes, coming fast and furious, and we love every bit of it.
