Elixir Above

And a week flashes by - December always seems to come and go in sudden jolts, with the end of year approaching, the cold already here, and this year the Solstice wed to an early morning Lunar Eclipse (which I missed, as 3:00 a.m. found me happily wrapped in dreams). Let's pick up from where I left off ...

A couple of years back I ran across the Alpha Psi Ecdysia burlesque troupe, performing at the Slipper Room of a New Year's Eve. APE is the first school-sanctioned student burlesque company in America - well done, SUNY New Paltz.

The founding Producing Director of the company, Lucida Sans, suddenly finds herself graduating, which is one of those things that sometimes happens to people at college. While I know she'll be happy to be Out In The World, she's leaving a consuming project behind her, and so the company puts together a farewell show to wish her off in style.

Thus the nerdtastic Dungeons and Drag Queens (Rule 34 Burlesque) revue, which brings together the current members of A.P.E. and a few select alumni of the company. There are bits and references drawn from geekdom in all its glory, with appearances by Dobby the House Elf, by the Mario Brothers, by some sort of manga character that I didn't know who she was, by a buxom Indiana Jones, by J. Alfred Prufrock - different kind of geekery, perhaps, but hey - and many more. I make the trip up to New Paltz, where in addition to burlesque there is snow on the ground. Whee!

I last saw Miss Elixir doing a dance of whirling chains. Tonight, after feigning drunkenness at a party, she clambers up her silks and gives her newest aerial number a first whirl. It's a nimble, strong debut. I'm told she performs at The Box these days, in the City, and I'll have to make it over there some night to see.
