The Rum Diary

When it comes to movie cars anything from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas would have been way too predicable...plus its been done already, and really well. So instead I went with the other Hunter S. Thompson movie, The Rum Diary.

Johnny Depp finds himself once again reprising the role of a Hunter Thompson character, but this time the hard drinking journalist, Paul Kemp. The story takes place in Puerto Rico in the early 60’s. Paul and his roommate Sala gat in trouble with the locals and have to make a hasty retreat from a bad situation. Not knowing what else to do, they use a mouthful of booze and a lighter to spit fire at their attackers, thus accidentally also roasting a cop.

Later they find their tiny car vandalized, the front seat ripped out, the doors and roof torn off and the windows broken. The only way they could drive it is if Paul sat on Sala’s lap. While riding in this awkward configuration, they were then pursued by the same cop they burned earlier. The shocks were extra springy to add comedy to the scene. They tried to act nonchalant and pretend that nothing was unusual but to no avail.

This resulted in one of the funniest chase scenes I’ve ever seen and thus was built for The Great Chase LUGNuts challenge...all about movie cars and car chases. Enjoy.
