Pholiota squarrosa: Shaggy Scalycap
We went on our first ever fungus foray last week and enjoyed it very much, though we came home suffering from a bad dose of information overload. We've since been going out with our cameras into the local woodlands and John is trying to adapt his photography to cope with the low light while I struggle to ID what we're finding. The tripod would have been useful here but we are awaiting delivery of a new cable release; also, he has just taken delivery of a Nikon flash gun and a Lumiquest Ultrasoft diffuser, but didn't take them out today because he needs to spend some time with the handbook to work out how to use his new toy.
We found this cluster at the base of a beech tree and I checked the gill colour- brownish- and the smell- radishy- so I think I'm right with my ID.
