In memory of the soldiers who fought for the Veszprém castle during the Turkish era
Central Europe
Hungary
Veszprém is one of the oldest urban areas in Hungary, and a city with county rights. It lies approximately 15 km (9 mi) north of the Lake Balaton. It is the administrative center of the county of the same name.
The city's name derives from the West Slavic-language personal name Bezprem or Bezprym (Proto-Slavic Bezprěmъ) which translates literally to "stubborn", "self-confident, not willing to retreat".
Unfortunately the inner city was closed for renovation works and we could not visit the old centre.
The commemorative plaque is located at the foot of the Castle Gate, on the left hand side, on the wall. The relief depicts a galloping hussar on horseback with his sword drawn.
The text of the plaque actually describes the actuality of the work's claim:
"In memory of the soldiers who fought for the Veszprém castle during the Turkish era
was established in 2016, the castle dates back to June 30, 1566
on the 450th anniversary of its first recapture
Veszprém City Municipality,
the commemorative committee of the "Zrínyi Miklós-Szigetvár 1566" commemorative year
with the support of the Ministry of Human Resources"
The creator of the work is sculptor Attila Diénes.
