Hungary

Veszprém is one of the oldest urban areas in Hungary, and a city with county rights. It lies approximately 15 km (9 mi) north of the Lake Balaton. It is the administrative center of the county of the same name.

The city's name derives from the West Slavic-language personal name Bezprem or Bezprym (Proto-Slavic Bezprěmъ) which translates literally to "stubborn", "self-confident, not willing to retreat".

Unfortunately the inner city was closed for renovation works and we could not visit the old centre.

This sculpture was created from a public donation.

If we recall what happened in Veszprém in 1956 and how correct and exemplary the actions of Árpád Brusznyai were, then we can truly understand what 1956 was in Hungarian history. He reminded that in the revolution of the countryside, almost only the positive face of '56 was shown. Workers' councils and revolutionary committees were created to maintain order, to enforce legality and justice, and human decency was the deciding factor in the election of members. The example of Árpád Brusznyai also shows this, since he took action against the distribution of weapons and the abuse of the residents of Ávós, and in the name of the revolution and honor, he asked for the anti-Semitic shouts given at the delegates' assembly. He did not flee abroad even later, even during his interrogation he trusted in legality and legality.
