The Pósa-house's pediment

Central Europe

Hungary

Veszprém is one of the oldest urban areas in Hungary, and a city with county rights. It lies approximately 15 km (9 mi) north of the Lake Balaton. It is the administrative center of the county of the same name.

The city's name derives from the West Slavic-language personal name Bezprem or Bezprym (Proto-Slavic Bezprěmъ) which translates literally to "stubborn", "self-confident, not willing to retreat".

Unfortunately the inner city was closed for renovation works and we could not visit the old centre.

The square's most patinated (late baroque) building with a mansard roof in the Copf style is the former residence of the Cistercians of Zirci. Its characteristic decorative element is the garland. Above the balcony, the coats of arms in an oval frame refer to the owner. The white guard crane is a symbol of vigilance, the zirci; the other is the coat of arms of the Cistercian Abbey of Heinrichau in Silesia. A vase decorated with garlands above the balcony door decorated with garlands. Above the central rizalite is a five-part Attic superstructure: the central part depicting Cistercian coats of arms between vases supported by two dwarf pillars, on it the puttos holding garlands leading to the outer vases.

The bank that moved here restored the building in such a way that it preserved its original character and beauty.
