Untouchable

We visited the home of a family belonging to the Untouchable caste. Though the caste system has been outlawed in India, it still very much exists as a social system. They are subsistence farmers in the Thar Desert, with a cow and a couple of goats. This woman graciously welcomed us into their home, her children posed for us, and she is shown here with her daughter making masala chai for her guests. It was a remarkable opportunity to meet someone whose life is so very different from ours.
