Alpine Shelter

Gasthaus Aescher-Wildkirchli is hidden in the Northeast corner of Switzerland in the Canton Appenzeller Innerrhoden. To get there I took first a tram up the mountain and than a quick 20 minutes hike down the slope. The trail takes you through a cavern which was habituated by bears during last glacial period. More recently the cave was used by hermit monks (1658 - 1853) who build a small chapel at the lower entrance of the cave.

The last portion of the trail is narrow and winds along the cliff. A small turn and all of the sudden you see this building attached to the rock. The scenario defies any imagination.

Getting inside was a treat after walking in frigid wind and rain for 20 minutes. It is a simple overnight shelter and has a nice typically swiss restaurant.

Interested in a photo tour through the American Southwest? I can help you with it and make you come back with unique shots.
