Lunar Eclipse at Delicate Arch
To any eclipse there is a beginning, even if just a faint one. The eclipse progresses gets to a climax and than goes back to were it was before - a full moon. It is the play and interaction of the sun, the moon and the earth. While the sun stays at a fixed point, the earth spins around itself and finally the full moon revolving around the earth and hiding itself behind the earth avoiding a complete sun exposure for a short period.
Last time this happened was April 15, 2014. I went with three friends to the Arches National Park as I had been there in January to find the right spot to document this happening. I scouted several iconic spots in the park and finally came to the conclusion that Delicate Arch was very appropriate.
We hiked up at 5pm and stayed up there the entire night to take our shots. Yes, it was VERY cold, but the experience was absolutely unique. At the end of the eclipse I got behind the arch with my headlamp to do some light painting while the very first light of the following day was already giving a faint color to the horizon.
Interested in a photo tour through the American Southwest, Brazil, Bolivia, Namibia or Tuscany? I can help you with it and make you come back with unique shots.
