Tradition

Two men sit in front of the high walls of the "old town" fronting a busy road in the city of El Jadida talking about things that friends do....speaking in Darija (undiscernable to me) through the din of noise from car and foot traffic as people bustle off to and from prayer or homewards to prepare for breaking the fast at the end of another day during the muslim holy month of Ramadan. This may seem like a common thing to see now, but according to my friends and others who live in Morocco, the influence of the modern western world is most surely creeping in ever more quickly as this ancient country struggles to catch up and maintain a place at the table in a modern technological world...seeing men wearing traditional attire such as thawbs, djellabas, (kaftan s) and taqiyah or fez while going about their daily business will be a thing of the past within the next ten years. Scenes like this will be rare. Suits and ties, banded or collared shirts and tailored trousers will replace them, and those Moroccans who treasure their culture and traditions will mourn the loss.
