Emily Howland Photograph Album

A previously unrecorded portrait of Harriet Tubman is now available online, among 48 abolitionists, suffragists, teachers, and statesmen gathered together in a photo album that belonged to Emily Howland—a lifelong advocate of freedmen’s schools and women’s rights. The Library of Congress and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture partnered to acquire the album at auction last year. After careful conservation (see video) and scanning, images of the whole album are now free to use and reuse to help tell many stories about the Civil War era, education, and the lives of women and African Americans.
