The very real, and deep, cave had long been a cooling refuge for residents and visitors high above the often baking-hot southeast New Mexico desert. It became a quirky roadside tourist attraction in the 1950s and its thematic rooms and outdoor displays have been a fun escape from reality, too. Thanks to a supposed UFO landing in nearby Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947, aliens are a hot attraction in the region.
