Caterpillar orgie...(Red-Headed Pine Sawfly)
Seriously, I have searched the internet for what this is, and have come up blank. These were on my pine tree, and had it only been one or two, I wouldn't have minded (or noticed), but this was too many to let go. There were three bunches of these guys, and as you can see had already munched some of the needles. So, I would like to know what these are, and what they become. These guys won't become anything in the trash can.
Update: Red-Headed Pine Sawfly Larvae. (Neodiprion lecontei) After searching and searching, I think this is it. Very destructive to pine trees so I'm glad I pruned off the branch and got rid of them. All the photos I saw have them in bunches like this, seems self-defeating...if I were hungry I wouldn't want 25 other people eating the same thing I was, at the same time (or at least spread out). The actual adult sawfly has the same red head with a set of double wings (4 total). Nuttin' like livin' in the country...
Another update. Yep, there were more on the tree tonight...damn things, go chew on the neighbors tree and leave mine!! They are now in a nice dry bag, in the trashcan. Can't wait until tomorrow...I threatend to get out the propane torch if there are tomorrow...watch the little buggers explode!
