The Green Flash: A Mock Mirage
¤ On Black ¤
Of green flash sightings 99% (literally) are either inferior mirages (66-75%) or mock mirages (the remainder minus one percent). This is a mock mirage. Mock mirages are caused when the viewer is located just above an atmospheric inversion, where the air near the surfaces is cooler than the air above the inversion.
Several forms of the green flash exist, the other reported sightings include sub-duct flashes and green rays--these two account for some of the final one percent.
PS. See if you can find the sail boat in the picture.
