Hembrug - urban exploration
Zaanstad
Netherlands
A glimpse inside one of the buildings of the former Hembrug munition factory.
The Hembrug area is one of the most important locations of industrial heritage in the Netherlands. The area measures 45 hectares and is a former industrial and military domain. Many buildings from the period 1895-1970 have been preserved on this enormous terrain. The industrial development of the 20th century is very visible here.
The complex lies in the heart of the Defence line of Amsterdam, a so-called 'redoubt of permanent defensive construction' around the capital. It was built between 1880 and 1920 by the former Department of War. Within the Defence line of Amsterdam, supply with weapons and ammunition was of great importance.
Redevelopment of the area is in process.
