Guildhall and much else
This building's flint chequered exterior stonework echoes a chequered and contrasting dark and light history.
Trinity Guildhall of King’s Lynn dates from the 1420s. It was originally the meeting place of the religious Guild of Merchants of the Holy Trinity. The Guild was abolished at the English Reformation of Henry VIII.
The hall's uses darkened. Half became a prison - the remainder a House of Correction for those "unwilling to work". A courtroom was added in 1767 to ensure an adequate supply of inmates,. The town gaoler had a house built next door in 1784. Cells were still used as the town lock-up until 1937!
For the comforts of other half, Georgian Assembly Rooms and a Card Room were added in 1768. The building is now the Town Hall with function spaces for more cheerful events like weddings.
