On the second day at Landmannalauger, we walked a ways off the trail, along a valley, up and down the peaks, over the skree, across the river (twice), by some sheep, along the spine of a ridge, up a crumbly peak that rained a large rock onto Kai, denting his hydroflask (and thankfully not his head), and then turning around and coming back the same way. It turned into a 13-hour hike. We were all tired, but amazed by the beauty we saw.
